Colloidal crystals show structural colors which have been used for aesthetic coloration, reflection-mode color displaying and anti-counterfeiting. In this work, a microfluidic system was used to uniform photocurable emulsions with silica particles at high volume fraction. The photonic emulsions sprayed with fluorocarbon oil on the substrate cause secondary assembly as the oil evaporates rapidly. The shape of photonic emulsions changes from a sphere to a polyhedron due to the stress applied between adjacent emulsions. Polyhedrons are fixed by photopolymerization and have a higher reflectance structure color than microspheres. By mixing photonic emulsions containing silica of different sizes, more diverse colors can be expressed. Photonic emulsions can create various 2D patterns that can be drawn directly or filled with molds as photonic ink. Therefore, polyhedron-modified photonic emulsions are suitable for expressing vivid structural colors in flat panel displays. |
