Hydrogels usually have lower mechanical strength and toughness than generic polymeric materials. So, many studies have been reported for improving the mechanical properties of hydrogel such as double-network hydrogel, nanocomposite hydrogel, and nano-structured hydrogel, etc. In this study, semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) gels were prepared by free radical crosslinking polymerization of acrylamide in the presence of poly(aspartic acid), PASP. The resulting gel was subsequently immersed in aqueous metal-ion solution to induce crosslinking of PASP chain through ionic bonding between carboxylic acid and metal cations. In this approach the inherently weak PASP gel could be improved mechanically by double networking with ductile PAAm network. The preparation, swelling behavior, effect of different metal ions, and mechanical properties of the hydrogels are presented. |
