Synthesis and Characterization of Triblock Copolymer Composed of Fluorinated Poly(arylene ether) Block and Sulfonated Poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) Block for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane |

There is a strong need for the proton exchange membrane capable of sustained operation above 100 oC to increase the efficiency and carbon monoxide tolerance of the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system. One of the approaches for high temperature membrane is to use amphiphilic rod-coil block copolymer. The amphiphilic block copolymer is expected to afford better phase separation for formation of proton channel as well as high thermal and mechanical property due to the rigid rod block. In this study, we have designed and synthesized novel triblock copolymers comprised of sulfonated poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (SPSAN) and fluorinated poly(arylene ether) (FPAE) (SPSAN-b-FPAE-b-SPSAN). By controlling the hydrophobic/hydrophilic chain length ratio in triblock copolymer and the degree of sulfonation, the membrane with well phase-separated morphology and higher proton conductivity could be obtained. |
