Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) has commonly been used as a hole transport layer (HTL) in most of organic photovoltaics, because PEDOT:PSS has optimal energy level as a HTL and high conductivity. However, a large particles size and highly acidic nature of PEDOT:PSS deteriorate the surface of ITO. For the purpose to solve these problems, we synthesized trichlorosilane-modified poly(3-hexylthiophene) (m-P3HT) and applied it to HTL in OPVs, because m-P3HT is expected not only to prevent ITO degradation but also to induce gradient composition of P3HT:PCBM across to the active layer. Since trichlorosilane group in m-P3HT can react with hydroxyl group on ITO surface, it is expected to anchor P3HT to the surface of ITO. The photovoltaic properties of devices made of m-P3HT as HTL was improved relative to that with PEDOT:PSS. |
