Functionalized poly (arylene sulfone)-clay composite membranes for direct methanol fuel cells |

Polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) based on a polymer composite consisting of sulfonated poly (arylene sulfone) (sPAS) and clay were prepared for direct methanol fuel cell. The clay is dispersed within the sPAS matrix by a solution intercalation method to afford claysPAS composite membranes. The unique properties of polymer-clay nanocomposites arise from nanoscale dispersion of clay layers in the polymer matrices. The objective of this work has been the preparation of exfoliated sPAS-clay nanocomposites, which display drastic improvements in mechanical strength and metanol permeability at high proton conductivity. |
