Polypropylene (PP) is one of the most distinguished polymer known for its cost effectiveness, mechanical stability, and low moisture transmittance. These advantages allow PP to be widely used in food packaging. However, due to its high oxygen transmittance, PP is not adequate for packaging food that requires a long shelf life or oxygen sensitive. Alternatives to PP; Ethylene vinyl alcohol, Polyacrylonitrile; are used for packaging of foods requiring advanced gas barrier properties. However, these materials are high in cost and are low in mechanical/thermal stability. In this research, PP with enhanced barrier properties is fabricated by addition of chitin and other reinforcements. The improved properties were evaluated with FT-IR, oxygen transmittance test, Thermogravimetric Analysis, and SEM.
