Polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites containing graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) were prepared via melt blending, using reacted product (MAPP-Apy) of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) and aminopyrene (Apy) as compatibilizer. PP is compatible with MAPP because of the PP chains, and GNP are compatible with Apy because of the π-π interaction. The compatibilizer therefore can enhance the interfacial bond between PP and GNP. Mixed solvents were used to prepare GNP and the compatibilizer was added to prevent re-aggregation after being dried. Due to the enhanced compatibility between PP and GNP, the tensile properties were improved by increasing the MAPP-Apy content with fixed GNP content. In addition, characterization by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the nanocomposites showed the well exfoliation and dispersion of GNP in PP. It is considered that better mechanical properties of PP/GNP nanocomposites can be fabricated by adding MAPP-Apy. |
