Processing and performance of PVC/silane-treated wood flour/organoclay nanocomposites |

Treating wood flour with an aminosilane was carried out to improve interfacial adhesion between the hydrophilic wood flour and hydrophobic PVC. Furthermore, a small amount of organoclay was incorporated to improve the performance of the wood plastic composites (WPCs). N-2(aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane was used to treat neat wood flour, and the treatment was confirmed by XPS. Wood flour/PVC composites with the organoclay were prepared by melt-blending followed by compression molding. The tensile strength of the WPCs with 3 phr of the organoclay was the best among the WPC samples. The SEM images for the fracture surfaces of the WPCs showed strong interfacial adhesion between wood flour and the PVC matrix. The WPCs with the aminosilane treated wood flour and the organoclay showed increased storage modulus and dimensional stability. The performance of the WPCs was also affected by processing condition. |
