Spherical poly(N-vinyl carbazole) (PVK) was synthesized by dispersion polymerization of N-vinyl carbazole (NVCA) in compressed liquid dimethyl ether (DME) using siloxane based (SS5050K, KF6017, PDMS-g-pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (Monasil PCATM)) and fluorine based (poly (3,3,4,4, 5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,9,9,10,10,10-heptadecafluorodecyl acrylate) (poly(HDFDA)), poly (3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,9,9,10,10,10 -heptadecafluorodecyl methacrylate) (poly(HDFDMA))) polymer as stabilizers and 2,2’-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) , 2,2’-azobis(2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile)(V-65), dimethyl 2,2’-azobis(isobutyrate)(V-601) as the initiators. The spherical and relatively uniform PVK particles could be produced even at 20 bar. The effects of the dispersant type and concentration on the morphology and size of polymer particles was investigated. We also studied the effects of the initiator type, concentration and temperature on molecular weight as well as morphology of polymer particles. The polymers were characterized by FE-SEM, GPC, image analyzer, etc. |
