Flame Retardancy and Physical Properties of Ethylene Vinyl Acetate Aluminum Trihydroxide /Clay Composites |

Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) is widely used as the insulation materials for electric wires and cables since it has excellent mechanical and electrical properties. Aluminum trihydroxide (ATH) is an inorganic flame retardant widely used due to its low cost and nontoxicity as well as easy incorporation into various thermoplastics and thermosets. When nanoclay is added into polyolefin, it can improve physical properties and flame retardancy. In the present work, clay was added to EVA/recycled ATH composites for improvement of flame retardancy and mechanical properties. Recycled ATH was obtained from recycling process of multi-layer packaging film wastes. EVA/ATH/Clay composite samples were prepared using a two roll-mill and a twin screw extruder. Morphologies and mechanical properties of composite were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and universal testing machine (UTM). Flame retardancy of EVA/ATH/Clay composites were examined using Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) test. |
