제목 The Effect of Y2O3 on Mechanical and Optical Properties of Silicon Nitride Ceramics
초록 Polycrystalline ceramics have grain boundaries that strongly scatter light. However, if the microstructure is controlled, light can transmit through the ceramic. Silicon nitride ceramics are sintered by liquid phase sintering. After liquid phase sintering there is obviously amorphous phase between grains and that decreases mechanical and optical properties of the ceramics. We studied the effect of different wt. % of Y2O3 added as an additive to silicon nitride ceramics on the microstructure, mechanical and optical properties. High relative density was found for Y2O3 doped silicon nitride ceramics. With addition of Y2O3 to silicon nitride ceramics the XRD pattern has shown that the β-phase in silicon nitride ceramics was suppressed. High hardness and high fracture toughness with Y2O3 was observed. TEM images show that with addition of Y2O3, the triple junction of grain had nano-size grains. Overall, optically translucent Y2O3 doped silicon nitride ceramics was fabricated with good mechanical properties.
