Based on mussel-inspired catecholamines, several examples for advanced composite materials are introduced. Utilizing excellent adhesive characteristic of catecholamine-based polymer, a mechanically strong, thermally stable, and electrically conductive polydopamine-embedded graphene hybrid film was manufactured with having a layer-stacked structure. As for fiber-reinforced composite applications, catecholamine was adopted as novel fiber-sizing materials to enhance interfacial properties between fibers and resin matrix. Also, catecholamine can give more porosity and nitrogen-doping effect to carbon nanomaterial-based aerogels, since it has high carbon yield characteristic. Using such outstanding properties, the applicability of catecholamines for electrochemical energy storage devices was investigated. Furthermore, a damage sensing technique is briefly introduced for structural self-healing composites. |
