제목 Bipolar membrane based on ether-free polymer for water electrolysis application
초록 The bipolar membrane(BPM) is a potential candidate for water electrolysis application because it can reduce the overpotential of the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions under different pH conditions between two electrolytes. Moreover, the water could be dissociated into H+ and OH- ions at the interface layer of BPM and then they were forward to the cathode and anode side, respectively. A key challenge is the design of the BPM to obtain efficient production of hydrogen. In this study, the BPM was successfully fabricated between a series of sulfonated poly(fluorine biphenyl indole) as a proton exchange membrane(PEM) and poly(arylene piperidinium) as an anion exchange membrane(AEM) to improve the chemical stability of the electrolyte membrane under strong bias conditions. Indeed, the result demonstrated that the ether-free electrolyte membrane had excellent chemical stability with weight loss lower than 15% after 28 days. On the other hand, the water electrolysis performance indicated that the overpotential of this BPM is 1.14V at 1 A/cm-2 and 30℃, which was significantly lower than that of mono-layer AEM (2.64V, at 1 A/cm-2) and PEM (1.77V, at 1 A/cm-2) under the same condition.
