In order to prevent the hydrogen (H2) gases, an active repulsive H2 barrier thin film (AB-tfilm) was constructed by combination of multilayer thin films: layer-by-layer (LBL), spin and plasma sequential coatings on a poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film. Protons generated by the reduction of H2 on the palladium nanolayer can be trapped in the nafion layer by the electrical repulsive force formed at the interface of the positively charged polymer monolayer. The multilayer AB-tfilms exhibited a notable improvement in H2 gas barrier properties.
