3D Photoactuator Based on Photochromic Liquid Crystal Polymer |

Recently, great attention has been attracted by liquid crystalline elastomers due to their unique characteristics as a stimuli-responsive material since the first proposal by de Gennes. These materials change their shapes reversibly even under low stress due to the liquid crystalline properties, which amplifies the dimensional changes through a phase transition. We synthesized a novel photochromic LC polymer which shows reversible photo-activated bending/unbending behavior responding to the light irradiation. A cast squared film shows the bending with a direction approximately 45° to the direction of polarized light at room temperature. The LC elastomer system without a cross-linked network enables a solution or melts processing into any desired forms. The reversible photomechanical bending with a specific direction at room temperature and its excellent processibility will be beneficial to practical realization of a wireless remote-controlled 3D actuator. |
