When water is evaporated quickly from a water based-colloidal suspension, colloidal particles easily protrude from the water surface. The protruding particles are then assembled on the water surface by the lateral capillary force. The assembled colloidal particles float on the water surface because their effective density becomes lower than water. However, the nucleation site of colloidal crystals by the protruding particles from the water surface is scattered and thus such colloidal particles are grown independently and become polycrystalline domains. Therefore, we introduced a shear force to reorient polycrystalline domains into single crystalline domain. The shear force was generated by a thinning meniscus, which is created by a meniscus pinning and thinning phenomena. |
