To overcome shortcomings in the rubbing process, some photo-induced LC alignment concepts have recently been reported as follows. One of the representative approaches is to utilize photoreactive moiety and its derivative which is incorporated into polymer as side group. The polymers are known to undergo a preferential orientation via a directionally selective photoreaction of such photoreactive groups by exposing to a linearly polarized ultraviolet light (LPUVL). However, these polyvinyl-based materials are not useful for the production of LCDs because of many unsolved problems, such as low thermal stability, low anchoring energy, low pretilt angle, limited processability with LPUVL. In this study, soluble photosensitive polyimide with photosensitive moiety as side groups was synthesized, and its photoreactivity and photoalignment characteristics were investigated. In addition, LC alignment behavior was examined on the polymer films exposed to LPUVL with varying exposure dose. |
