The liquid-liquid equilibrium and surface tension of ternary polymer solution are investigated. The cloud point and surface tension of polystyrene/cyclohexane/propanol, polystyrene/cyclohexane/pentanol, poly(vinyl methyl ether)/water/methanol and poly(vinyl methyl ether)/water/propanol systems are measured. The ternary polystyrene solution exhibits uper critical solution temperature(UCST) type phase equilibrium whereas the ternary poly(vinyl methyl ether) solution shows lower critical solution temperature(LCST) type phase equilibrium. The surface tension of the polystyrene solution shows repulsive type which means that the surface tension of polymer solution increase with the concentration of polymer. On the other hand, poly(vinyl methyl ether) solution shows attractive type. The lattice based thermodynamic model applied to the calculation of phase equilibrium and surface tension, simultaneously. The calculated results for the surface tension and phase equilibrium of polymer solutions are found to show good agreement with experimental results over the entire range of investigated composition. |
