A huge amount of coffee grounds that has been generated anually in coffee producing industries causes a variety of environmental problems. Many researches have been reported for recycling coffee grounds into useful resources such as activated carbons for supercapacitor application among others such as biofuels, building materials, and adsorbents. However, how pre-treatment conditions such as oil removal from coffee grounds before carbonization and activation influence on the properties of activated carbons is not revealed yet. In this study, activated carbons for supercapacitor electrodes was prepared through carbonization and CO2 activation process after removing oil components from coffee grounds under various conditions. The effect of oil removal conditions on physical and chemical properties of activated carbons was demonstrated in terms of pore structure and electrochemical performance. |
