Despite DMFC has many advantages, there is one of current issues to prevent them from commercialization. It is that methanol crosses over the polymer membrane from the anode to the cathode leading to loss fuel, then reduce the overall cell efficiency. We report cross-linked organic/inorganic nano-structure membranes for DMFC. The reason for accepting organic/inorganic membranes is that it has relatively the smaller size of ion-rich cluster than that of NafionTM. Morphological changes in organic/inorganic membrane depending on the cross-linking density and the sulfonation degree were investigated using Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS). For this purpose, the sulfonated polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-polystyrene (SSBS) and tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) or tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) were used. Proton conductivity and methanol permeability of membranes were measured and the effect of morphological change on them is discussed. |
