제목 Formation of liquid crystal phase of graphene oxide formed by very large flakes
초록 One of the methods to produce graphene, monolayer of graphite, is by oxidation of graphite producing, as intermediate stage, graphene oxide (GO). This method is attractive because GO can be easily dispersed in water and processed with wet methods. Another very interesting aspect is that graphene oxide forms lyotropic liquid crystalline phases. Thus ordered phases are formed above a threshold concentration. We produce graphene oxide according to the Hummer’s method, obtaining liquid crystal phases at extremely low threshold presumably due to the very large flakes of our GO. We report our study on the concentration threshold for the appearance of liquid crystal phase as well as the evaluation of the region of phase coexistence, related to the size distribution of the flakes. We studied the occurrence of liquid crystal phases monitoring the appearance of birefringence by polarized optical microscopy while the dimension of the flakes was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy.
