We synthesized a series of 2-naphthoxymethyl-substituted polystyrene (P2NAP#) using polymer analogous reactions to investigate liquid crystal (LC) alignment property, surface morphology, and molecular orientation of these polymers. When the molar content of 2-naphthoxy containing monomeric unit in the P2NAP# is more than 57 %, homeotropic LC alignment of the LC cell fabricated with unrubbed P2NAP# film was observed. As the rubbing density increases from 0 to 75, the pretilt angles of the LC cell fabricated with rubbed P2NAP (molar content of 2-naphthoxy side group: 100 %) film gradually decrease from 90° to 85°. As the rubbing density increases from 75 to 100, the pretilt angles of the LC cells fabricated with rubbed P2NAP film drastically decrease from 85° to 0.05°. When the rubbing density is more than 100, LC alignment directions on the mechanically rubbed surface of P2NAP films were found to be homogeneous and perpendicular LC alignment to the rubbing direction. |
