This study highlights the nanostructural effect on resonant Rayleigh light scattering properties of single Au nanoparticles, including the effect of nanoparticle size, shape, aspect ratio and the RI of local dielectric medium. The light-scattering colors observable from the dark-field images and the plasmonic resonant spectra of single Au nanoparticles were comparatively analysed by the dark-field microspectroscopy system. The results suggest that the shape, size and aspect ratio are important structural factors in determining the optical properties of single Au nanoparticles. And the refractive-index (RI) sensitivity of single nanoparticle is a key factor for the plasmonic sensing applications. Our procedure can be used to determine the optical sensitivities of other nanoparticles. The systematic study on resonant Rayleigh light scattering properties and refractive index sensitivities of variously shaped Au nanoparticles will highly contribute to the design of ultrasensitive LSPR biosensors. |
