Prediction of separation efficiency of an industrial cyclone for polymer particles separation using computational fluid dynamics |

This study aims to design a high-efficiency industrial cyclone for the separation of polymer dust using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A common Stairmand cyclone was used for validating the CFD model against the literature experimental data in terms of the Euler number and the half cut-off size. Reynolds stress model (RSM) was found as the best turbulence model for the given cyclone. The CFD grid resolution was properly checked via the grid convergence index (GCI) method. The one-way coupling discrete phase model (DPM) gave a reasonable prediction accuracy keeping a low computational cost. The effect of different particle properties on the cyclone performance such as pressure drop and collection efficiency was investigated using the CFD model. A set of the dimensionless group was used to constraint the similarity between various particle properties. To improve the cyclone performance for polypropylene particles separation, a cyclone design with round roof barrel was proposed. The present cyclone design with a round roof barrel showed good separaton efficiency of polymer particles. |
