Industrial waste gas-based biohydrogen and biomaterial production |

A sustainable supply of cheap feedstock is a critical factor in making bioenergy and biomaterial production economically feasible. The utilization of carbon monoxide (CO)-containing industrial waste gas may render the industrial bioprocess cost-effective. Thermococcus onnurineus NA1 was isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent. The strain was shown to be capable of producing H2 under the growth conditions supplemented with one-carbon substrates such as CO and formate as well as starch. By the combination of rational and evolutionary engineering, H2 productivity of T. onnurineus NA1 was significantly enhanced on CO and even by-product gas of steel-mill process. H2 production has recently been being demonstrated using a pilot scale bioreactor with synthesis gas or steel-mill waste gas as feedstock and the result and future prospect will be discussed. |
