Hydrogels composed of N-isopropylacrylamide(NIPAAm) and sulfadimethoxine monomer(SDM) exhibited a pH-induced volume-phase transition in water. This results from pH-dependent ionization/deionization of the sulfonamide group and reversible side group crystallization. In this study, in order to enhance the rate of swelling-deswelling of hydrogels in response to pH changes, we introduced poly (ethylene glycol) (PEO) graft chains into hydrogels composed of NIPAAm and SDM by copolymerization of poly (ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (Mn 1,100) with NIPAAm and SDM. The graft chains are designed to form channels for water molecules through the skin layer. Finally, faster swelling-deswelling changes in response to pH change were investigated in the PEO-grafted gels |
