Tuning the H2 to CO Ratio in the Electroreduction of CO2 via Electronic Reconstruction of Gold Nanoparticles on Layered Titanate Nanosheets |

The electroreduction of CO2 to value-added products is as a critical approach to reduce globally accelerating CO2 emissions and incorporate renewable electricity from intermittent sources into the global energy supply. Here, we report a novel hybrid electrocatalyst incorporating well-dispersed gold nanoparticles in a 0 to 93 wt.% Au range on ultra-thin titanate nanosheets. Inferred by XPS measurements, an electronic reconstruction of both nanocomponents was shown to dictate the stabilization of formed reaction intermediates and resulting product selectivity. The CO Faradaic efficiency could be varied within a 3 to over 80% range, balanced by an exclusive H2 formation (HER). The synergism between both components underlines our novel hybrid structure as a promising route to produce syngas with widely tunable H2 to CO ratios for a sustainable CO2 reutilization in the production of syngas. |
