We investigate the coarsening kinetics of two-phase microstructures using a new spin-exchange-path-controlled Monte Carlo (MC) model. Conventionally, Kawasaki dynamics has been used to predict the evolution of the microstructures via diffusion-controlled mechanisms. Here, the Kawasaki dynamics is modified such that a new model incorporates the control over the spin exchange rate as a function of the resultant configurational change. Especially, the new model is applied for the bicontinous systems with the solid and pore phase, where the microstructural evolution occurs mainly by the surface diffusion of the solid phase. To compare and verify these two models, various measures for microstructural length scale were calculated and, then, the kinetics of the evolution of the bincontinuous microstructure was examined. This new model can be a possible simulation method for predicting the coarsening of porous metal systems. |
