In this study, transition metal oxysulfide catalysts were prepared as a cathode for proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE). As a first step, fern-like NiyCo1-yOx was electrodeposited on carbon paper by controlling the composition. Then, S ion exchange reaction was conducted on the NiyCo1-yOx as a simple sulfidation process under room temperature and ambient pressure. Depending on S atom ratios with higher binding energy, intrinsic activity of NiyCo1-yOxSz for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was significantly changed. In addition, wetting ability of the catalyst determined by roughness was important factor for the stability of gas evolving reaction. Furthermore, performance of PEMWE employing the fern-like NiyCo1-yOxSz cathode was tested. |
