At the meeting the synthesis and characterization of bisphenol-A based polycarbonates (PC) via melt polymerization will be discussed. High molecular weight polycarbonates were synthesized from the reaction of bisphenol-A, dihydroxybiphenyl, and diphenylcarbonate. As polycarbonate oligomers, amino polycarbonate (Amino-pc) with controlled molecular weight were synthesized via aminolysis of high molecular weight PC's with tetraethylenpentamine (TTEPA). Dihydroxy terminated bisphenol-A based PC's (PC-OH) with controlled molecular weights were also synthesized via melt polymerization of bisphenol-A (BPA) with diphenyl carbonate (DPC) in the presence of a basic catalyst. Epoxidation of polycarbonate oligomers was performed and their epoxy equivalent weights were measured by titration. Molecular weight characteristics, thermal properties of both high molecular weight PC's and PC oligomers will be discussed. |
