Epoxy-Miscible Unimolecular Core-Shell Bottlebrush Polymers as Amphiphilic Toughening Additives |

Improving the fracture resistance of epoxy-based polymers without decreasing modulus and glass transition temperature is a major challenge in industrial applications. In this work, we designed core-shell bottlebrush polymers for epoxy toughening additives. Comparing the characteristics of conventional core-shell rubber particles or block copolymer micelles which have been widely used as epoxy modifier, we anticipate that core-shell bottlebrush polymers can improve the toughness via elongated rubbery cores in the sidechains. Polybutylacrylate (PBA)- and polymethylacrylate (PMA)-based bottlebrush polymers were synthesized via grafting-through polymerization. The core composed of elastic PBA polymer to absorb impact and to amplify the toughness. The PMA shell can promote the dispersion of these polymers within epoxy matrix as structures. These polymers were applied to epoxy resins and the resulting morphologies were characterized by TEM, the lap shear strength and impact peel strength. |
