Nanostructure-dependent adhesiveness of water-droplet on controlled substrates or polymer films |

The mimicry of the lotus leaf with superhydrophobic and self-cleaning surface characteristics has been attractive in various industry fields for the removal of undesirable contaminants from the surfaces of high-end products. The water-droplet adhesiveness on a surface is closely related to the differences between the advancing and receding angle: low adhesiveness is generally observed when the difference is minimized. Here, hydrophobicity-controlled aluminum oxide or polymer surfaces successfully demonstrated as follows: the adhesiveness of the water-droplet could be freely with broad ranges from highly adhesive to self-cleanable, depending on the nanometer- or micrometer-scale patterned structures on these surfaces. |
