While silver is one of the noble metals, the surface of silver in the nanometer regime are highly unstable. It is already well known that silver nanoparticles functions as the catalyst for many chemical reactions. However, the enhanced surface activities of silver nanoparticles make the metals prone to corrosive deterioration. In this work, we readily synthesized polypyrrole-coated silver nanoparticles using a polymeric stabilizer in aqueous solution. Silver precursor acts as an oxidizing agent for pyrrole monomer, leading to the coating of polypyrrole on silver nanoparticles. The core-shell nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. Importantly, we examined the anticorrosive properties of the core-shell nanoparticles against electrochemical oxidation and tarnishing. Furthermore, we also explored the catalytic performance of the core-shell nanoparticles to demonstrate their usefulness. |
