Graft copolymer is a polymer having branch chains grafted to the backbone. If branch chains are different from the main backbone chain, they are graft block copolymers. Such graft block copolymers are known to exhibit different phase behavior from linear block copolymers. Those graft copolymers are usually prepared by anionic polymerization and subsequent grafting reactions, however, imperfect stoichiometry and side reactions lead to various inhomogeneity in the graft copolymers. In this study, we critically characterize a polystyrene-g-polyisoprene (PS-g-PI) synthesized by anionic polymerization and graft reaction using diphenyl ethylene functional groups. The PS-g-PI appears reasonably homogeneous by SEC analysis but the TGIC separation depending on PI branch number shows large distribution in the number of PI grafts. The chemical composition of resolved peaks was determined by using multiple detection and the molecular weight of each block was estimated at the critical condition. |
