Pyrolyzed fuel oil (PFO) is a promising needle coke feedstock due to its high aromatic content. However, high concentration of heteroatom such as nitrogen in PFO can cause isotropic or mosaic formation, which is undesired for needle coke manufacture. In the current work, an activated carbon pre-treatment process has been employed to remove nitrogen from PFO. The denitrogenation of PFO has been successfully conducted by treating with activated carbon at 50oC for 2 hours. The nitrogen content after adsorption process was analyzed with elemental analyzer, showing a decrease from 1.6% to 0.07%. It is evidenced that activated carbon can be an effective pre-treatment agent for PFO to meet the requirement of needle coke manufacturing. |
