A series of thermo-sensitive acylated polymers were synthesized by N-acylation of glycol chitosan with various carbolic anhydrides, e.g. propionic, butyric, valeric and hexanoic anhydrides. The degree of acylation (DA) was controlled in a range of 19~75.4% by varying the feed ratio of reactants. It exhibited thermo-sensitive sol-gel transition properties and their transition temperature was significantly dependent on the DA. The sol-gel transition temperature could be controlled from 23 to 62℃ depending on the acyl chain length, DA and the concentration of polymer. With longer acyl chain and higher DA, N-acylated glycol chitosans exhibited a lower sol-gel transition temperature. Especially, N-hexanoyl glycol chitosans showed thermo-sensitive sol-gel transition properties below body temperature even at a low concentration(4wt%). N-acylated glycol chitosans could be useful as new thermogelling biomaterials for various biomedical applications, such drug delivery and tissue engineering. |
