Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behaviors have been observed for several classes of molecules, for which molecular J arrangements or restriction of vibrational relaxation serve as the key mechanisms. We have synthesized a series of donoracceptordonor (D–A–D) type triads based on pyrone as a core. The D–A–D triads display AIE behaviors, with both photoluminescence quantum yields and lifetimes being significantly improved. Crystal structure analyses and photophysical measurements for nanoaggregates revealed J aggregate formation, while additional experiments for the PMMA films doped with the compounds suggested that restriction of intramolecular non-radiative processes also plays an important role. We envisioned that the dual mechanisms for the AIE behaviors will permit unique applications, including bioimaging of protein aggregates. |
