Conjugated ployelectrolytes (CPEs) contain charged pendent groups which make them soluble in water and pi-delocalized conjugated backbone with useful optical/electronic properties. Polyfluorene-based CPE, poly(9,9’-bis(6-N,N,N-trimethylammoniumhexyl)fluorene-alt-1,4-(2,5-bis(6-N,N,N-trimethylammoniumhexyloxy))phenylene) tetrabromide, was synthesized by Suzuki coupling polymerization and successive quaternization. The bromide counter ion is replaced by several different anions such as tetrafluoroborate, trifluoromethanesulfonate, hexafluorophosphate, tetraphenylborate and tetrakis( 1-imidazoyl) borate, etc. The counter ion effects on optical and electronic properties of the CPEs are studied using photoluminescence spectroscopy. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) to fluorescein-labeled DNA is also discussed with changing counter ions. |
