Effects of using a water soluble initiator on the characteristics of suspension polymerized toner particles |

Polymerized toners can overcome the problems of pulverized toners and make high-speed and high-quality color laser printing possible. If suspension polymerized toners can be prepared using a water soluble initiator it would be very beneficial technically and economically. Therefore, in this study, styrene based suspension polymerized toners were prepared using a water soluble initiator. Calcium chloride and trisodium phosphate were used as inorganic suspending agents. To achieve a very small particle size and a narrow particle size distribution of toner particles, the stability of oil droplets formed by high speed shear, which polymerize to toner particles, is crucial. The effects of the concentration of the inorganic suspending agents on the characteristics of toner particles were elucidated by observing the particle size and size distribution. The possibility of preparing high-quality suspension polymerized toners using the water soluble initiator was elucidated. |
