Spiropyran, which has unique optical properties due to reversible ring opening isomerization, have advantages when introduced to mechano-chromic polymeric materials. However, introducing spiropyran, as a hydrophobic molecule, has limitation conjugating with hydrophilic polymer. In this study, a novel spiropyran cross-linker was synthesized by grafting poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) on both side of spiropyran to form SP-PEGDA modulator. Therefore, SP-PEGDA would allow us to cross-link hydrogel possessing mechano-responsiveness. The properties of SP-PEGDA cross-linked hydrogel, such as swelling ratio and elastic modulus, was controlled by varying concentration of SP-PEGDA. In addition, SP-PEGDA cross-linked hydrogel generates internal stress due to 3D deformation in swelling process. As a result, SP-PEGDA cross-linked hydrogel undergoes mechano-chromic activation and shows color changes from yellow to purple responses to internal stress. |
