Homologation of carbonyl compounds by one less or one more carbon has been highly useful in organic and medicinal chemistry. Various homologation methods have been reported but they also have some limitations such as harsh reaction conditions and incompatibility with sensitive functional groups. We have investigated a convenient, facile alternative method to provide either one-carbon less or more homologation of aliphatic aldehydes simultaneously with a one-carbon synthon, phenylsulfonylnitromethane. Using this method, various aliphatic aldehydes can be transformed to homologous carbonyl compounds under mild condition in good yields through 2~3 step. |
