The effect ozone treatments on activated carbons (ACs) was studied in the conjunction of Cr(VI) adsorption behaviors. The surface properties of ozone treated ACs were determined by pH, acid-base values, FT-IR, and SEM. N2/77K adsorption isotherm characteristics, including the specific surface areas, micropore volumes, and microporosity, were confirmed by BET equation and Boer's t-plot methods. The adsorption amount of Cr(VI) onto ozone treated ACs was determined by ICP-AES. As a result, the specific surface areas and micropore volumes slightly decreased in ozone treatments on ACs. However, the adsorption amount of Cr(VI) on ozone treatment ACs increased with increasing the ozone treatment time due to the increase of oxygen-containing functional groups. As expected, the adsorption efficiency rate of Cr(VI) on treated ACs was decreased with increasing reaction time. Consequently, it was found that Cr(VI) adsorption behaviors of ozone treated ACs were correlated with the adsorption characteristics and surface functional groups. |
