The co-culture system of microalgae and bacteria is considered as an alternative system that can sustainably remove inorganic nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorous) and COD. The harvesting problem can be solved by using the immobilization technology. Ten different culture systems (batch) in 250-ml flasks were set up to remove nitrogen, phosphorous, and COD from the synthetic wastewater at 5-d treatment process. C. vulgaris and P. putida were immobilized using the sodium alginate solution. The culture system of immobilized microalgae with suspended bacteria removed 70% of nitrogen (highest removal). The removal of phosphorous was highest (83% removal) where suspended microalgae was used with immobilized bacteria. The culture systems of suspended microalgae-immobilized bacteria, immobilized microalgae-free bacteria, and co-immobilized were proved best for the COD removal (85%, 86%, and 86%, respectively). |
