The inclusion of inorganic fillers into polymers improves the mechanical and thermal properties of final products. In this work, pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) with higher thermal stability were successfully prepared by incorporating vinyl-modified silica nanoparticles. Silica nanoparticles were modified by reacting with 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane via sol-gel method. The acrylic copolymer matrices were synthesized by solution polymerization of 2-EHA, EA, and AA with AIBN as an initiator. The copolymer was further modified with glycidyl methacrylate which introduced the unsaturated groups available for UV curing. The adhesion performance of silica/acryl copolymer composite PSAs was investigated using FT-IR, gel fraction, peel strength and cohesion properties. Thermal properties of the composite PSAs were improved with increasing silica content and UV dose as confirmed by using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. |
