Poly(ether-b-amide) (PEBA) is a segmented block copolymer type thermoplastic elastomer consisting of semi-crystalline polyamide as a hard segment and flexible polyether as a soft segment. In this study, we synthesized PEBA having bio-based aromatic polyamide, poly(m-xylene dodecanamide) (MXD12), as a hard segment and PTMG as a soft segment. The carboxy terminated MXD12 oligomer was synthesized from m-xylene diamine and castor oil derived dodecanedioic acid. And then, that was reacted with poly(tetramethylene glycol) (PTMG) by melt condensation polymerization to obtain MXD12-b-PTMG multiblock copolymers with 25 wt% and 75 wt% HS content. At a given HS content, MXD12-b-PTMG exhibited wider service temperature range and better mechanical properties than that of PEBA having aliphatic long chain nylon 12 as a hard segment. Moreover, the oxygen barrier properties of MXD12-b-PTMG exhibited more than 3 times higher than that of nylon 12-b-PTMG. |
