The energy storage system (ESS) is attracted a lot of interest recently, because it could be the solution of the increasing electric demands. Among various ESS, vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) has been studied in a very active way. There are several advantages of using VRFB as large-scale energy storage applications, such as long cycle time, high reliability, high discharge capability and power density. Typically, electrode materials in VRFB are carbon materials like carbon felts due to their wide operation potential and stability in acidic solution. However, carbon felts have problem of poor kinetic reversibility. In this work, we investigated the effects of the metal oxide that was coated on the carbon electrode to provide catalytic properties. Composite of metal oxide and carbon electrodes show the catalytic effects, which facilitate the electron and mass transfer kinetics resulting in increase of energy efficiency and VRFB performance. The performance of the electrodes was evaluated by measuring cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge single cell test. |
