Molecular Self-Assembly from Small Molecules and Liquid Crystals to Macromolecules |
제목 |
Self-assembly of discotic liquid crystal into molecular wires in thin films |
초록 |
The self-organization of discotic liquid crystal (LC) can be used to create very easily thin film formed by molecular wires. The wires can extend in length to macro-scale due to π-π interaction between adjacent molecular cores which allows charge transportation along the wires. We analyzed several factors that influence the self-assembly of the discotic molecules such as type of solvent and surface properties. The resulting morphology of the films was monitored by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and polarized optical microscopy and additional investigations were performed varying the sample temperature. We could also follow the phase transition behaviour in films with thicknesses below optical resolution by AFM investigations as function of temperature. In addition, we could observe molecular re-orientation and dewetting phenomena occurring in some areas. We could also infer a planar alignment of the molecules from the high anisotropy in the Raman spectrum of the fibers. |
