Core-Shell Structured Star Polymers as Highly Effective Additives for Epoxy Toughening |

Epoxy polymers have low toughness and impact resistance due to highly crosslinked structures. Toughening of such brittle polymers via incorporation of a dispersed elastomeric phase is well-known as an effective method to improve mechanical properties. In this study, we propose core shell structured star polymers. The star polymers were composed of polymethyl acrylate arm and various cores such as glassy divinylbenzene or rubbery butadiene. We have synthesized star polymers having various length of PMA arms with DVB or BDA cores. The resulting morphologies were characterized by TEM and various nanostructures such as spheres and vesicles were observed within the cross-linked epoxy matrix. We observed the lap shear strength and impact peel strength to confirm the adhesive enhancement. Furthermore, we also measured the fracture toughness under various conditions and optimized the toughening effect with respect to the core property and length of arm in the star polymer additives |
