UV/Vis/NIR absorption spectroscopic investigation of electrolyte-gated thin films of polymer semiconductors |

Electrochemical processes of organic and polymer semiconductors under applied voltages tune the charge-carrier density of the materials and change their electronic structures. We investigate the in-situ UV/Vis/NIR absorption characteristics of various p-type polymer semiconductors under electrolyte gating. By using the widely studied ion-gel electrolyte systems based on existing P(VDF-HFP) and [EMIM][TFSI], we are able to detect the characteristic changes of various polymers including poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and poly[2,5-bis(3-tetradecylthiophen-2-yl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene] (PBTTT). Electrochemical doping of polymer semiconductors induces the decrease in the neutral π-π* excitation peaks and increase in the polaron peaks. We also show that the spectroscopic changes of polymer semiconductors through the electrochemical doping processes in the electrolyte-gating system are closely related to their charge transport properties in thin film states. |
