We have described a novel synthesis method for silica nanoparticles, which involves the combi-nation of these nanoparticles with targetable and non-targetable fluorescent dopamine conjugated hyaluronic acid (HA) by rational chemical dehydration. The resulting HA-decorated silica fluo-rescent nanoparticles, electrostatically linked to form ionic complexes with polyaniline (PANI), possessed high intensity and were monodisperse in solution, near infrared light responsive, and amenable to specific labeling of cancer cell lines. When exposed to near-infrared irradiation, the fluorescent silica within carbonized HA on PANI nanoparticles exhibit photothermal cytotoxicity guided bio-imaging directing between malignant cancer and normal cells through CD44 receptor.
